Materials Used in Motorcycle Clothing –

In motorcycle clothing, the right choice of materials plays a key role in providing protection, comfort, and safety for riders.
Thanks to continuous technological progress and innovation, motorcycle apparel designers have access to an ever-growing variety of materials that meet different needs.
The material used affects the final price of the product, as well as wearing comfort and safety. So, let’s take a look at the materials used in motorcycle clothing production.

  1. Mesh: Mesh is a lightweight, breathable material with high air permeability. It is commonly used in summer gear. Mesh effectively wicks moisture away and provides comfort when riding in high temperatures. This material is often made of nylon and features microscopic openings that allow free airflow. Thanks to this, mesh motorcycle clothing offers exceptional ventilation, keeping riders cool and comfortable even on hot days.
  2. TFL (Techno Fine Leather): TFL is a technologically enhanced synthetic leather that offers high durability and abrasion resistance. This material is used in various parts of motorcycle clothing, such as sleeves and areas exposed to a higher risk of scuffing. TFL is also waterproof and easy to clean. An interesting fact about TFL is that synthetic leather can also be more animal-friendly than natural leather. The production of traditional cowhide is associated with animal slaughter, while synthetic leather like TFL is produced without using animal skins. Therefore, for people who care about animal rights and the natural environment, TFL is an attractive alternative that offers high quality and durability—whether for jackets, gloves, or motorcycle pants.
  3. Cowhide leather: Cowhide leather is a traditional material used in motorcycle clothing. It is known for its durability, flexibility, and abrasion resistance. Cowhide leather also offers good protection against wind and rain. This tough leather is often used in motorcycle jackets, pants, and gloves. Interestingly, cowhide leather is also naturally breathable, which helps maintain proper ventilation and comfort while riding—therefore it’s important to remember proper care. Clogging the pores of the leather, e.g., by over-oiling/greasing, will block its natural ventilation.
  4. Kangaroo leather: Kangaroo leather is an exceptionally strong material that offers excellent protection in the event of a fall. It is lighter and more flexible than cowhide leather, making it ideal for use in motorcycle gloves. Kangaroo leather provides outstanding dexterity and feel on the handlebars while maintaining a high level of safety. Kangaroo leather is also much more flexible than traditional cowhide leather. This property allows for an excellent fit of motorcycle clothing, especially gloves. The elasticity of kangaroo leather makes gloves comfortable and provides an excellent grip on the handlebars. Kangaroo leather comes from controlled sources and is legally obtained. In Australia, where most kangaroo leather is produced, there are strict regulations governing culling and processing. Kangaroo leather production is sustainable and carried out with respect for the natural environment.
  5. Cordura: Cordura is a synthetic material with high resistance to tearing and abrasion. It is often used in motorcycle jackets and pants as an outer layer to provide additional protection. Cordura is also waterproof and easy to clean, making it a popular choice in motorcycle clothing.
  6. GORE-TEX:  This is an advanced membrane material that offers protection against wind and water while ensuring breathability. It is often used in motorcycle clothing, especially jackets, to provide comfort when riding in different weather conditions.
  7. Kevlar: Kevlar is an extremely durable material made from aramids. It is known for high resistance to tearing and abrasion. Kevlar is often used in reinforcements in key areas of motorcycle clothing, such as elbows, knees, and hips. It was developed by DuPont. Interestingly, Kevlar is also used in the production of tires and other products that require high strength.
  8. Nomex: Nomex is a flame-resistant material used primarily in protective clothing for motorcyclists. Like Kevlar, it was designed by DuPont and offers a high level of protection against extreme temperatures and flames. This material is used in protective clothing for motorcyclists, especially those competing in motorsports where there is a risk of fire. Nomex is also used in the aviation and aerospace industries to produce flame-resistant clothing for pilots and astronauts.
  9. SuperFabric: SuperFabric is a specially engineered material with very high resistance to abrasion and cuts. It consists of layers reinforced with microscopic ceramic elements. This material is often used in protective panels on shoulders, elbows, and knees, providing additional protection against injuries.
  10. Neoprene: Neoprene is an elastic material with thermal insulation properties. It is often used in motorcycle gloves and knee protectors to provide protection against wind and cold, as well as extra comfort and fit.
  11. Thinsulate: Thinsulate is a lightweight and warm insulating material. It is commonly used in motorcycle clothing designed for cooler weather conditions, such as jackets and gloves. Thinsulate provides excellent thermal insulation with minimal bulk, enabling freedom of movement. Thanks to its unique construction, Thinsulate effectively retains heat inside motorcycle clothing, making it ideal for use in cooler weather. Interestingly, despite its low bulk, Thinsulate can provide significantly better thermal insulation than traditional insulating materials of greater thickness.
